Youth Alpha & Light the Blue Touch Paper
After a very successful launch last year with 85 young people and young adults from Living Youth, the Parish of St Colmcille’s, Belfast, the Parish of Maghera, Newcastle and St Louis’ Grammar School, we decided to run this programme again. We currently have 50 young adults on this programme in Living Youth, De La Salle College, Belfast and the Parish of Glenavy & Killead. The programme includes 12 interactive video episodes that give young people the chance to freely explore the basics of the Christian faith and decide what it means in their lives.
Youth Alpha gives young people the opportunity to discover who Jesus is and the course is laid out in a progressive manner which introduces different concepts, one at a time. For each session we come together to eat, socialise, play games and then we move into our small groups to consider one of the Youth Alpha Programme Topics which include: Who is Jesus? Why did He die? What is faith? How and why do we pray? Reading the Bible, the Holy Spirit, evil, healing and tell others about the Church.
The Youth Alpha Programme concluded with a weekend residential where all three groups come together to finish the programme. On the residential, young people have the opportunity to discuss, explore and develop their faith, to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation and to plan the next steps on the journey they have begun with us on the Youth Alpha Programme.

Light the Blue Touch Paper
We are currently in the middle of the pilot of this new programme which we are writing with some of our young adults for those who have previously gone through the Youth Alpha Programme. On this programme we come together to eat, socialise, pray and consider a social issue or an aspect of our faith with the help of guest speakers. To date we have had inputs from Jim Deeds with extracts from his new book ‘Surfing Life’s Waves,’ Brendan Dowd with songs from his new album ‘In Him All Things’, Clare Morgan the Youth Officer from SVP and we have visited Morning Star House and had an input from Gregory Mc Guigan on homelessness. We are currently planning the content for our residential in Corrymeela in January.
