Deanby Folk Group

Deanby Folk Group was formed around 25 years ago. The current leader of the group, Mairead Adams recently took time out of her busy schedule to speak to the Youth Director about the development of the folk group down the years. There are currently 13 members, ranging in age from 13 to 62!! The majority of members are now in their early twenties, most are attending University and are working part-time but still make time to attend, a number of them have been members of the folk group since Primary School. Mairead feels that the dedication of these young people is to be applauded and commended and is very much appreciate by the Parish Priest Fr Ciaran Dallat and the parishioners. She explained that although the membership is constantly changing the music remains at the heart of the group.

The Folk Group sings at 6.30 pm mass in Sacred Heart Church every Saturday night. With the opening of the new parish centre, facilities are now available to allow the group to practice both before and after mass, without disturbing the worship of the Blessed Sacrament.

The group are blessed with musical talent and their instruments include two guitars, a flute, the occasional bodhrán and violin. Members of the folk group attend the DCF weekend each year and admit that they are happiest when they are playing loud and fast! Members of the folk group are hoping to attend the DCF day organised by the Youth Commission in Belfast in March and the younger members may join us for the 2nd Annual Youth Gathering on Palm Sunday.
