The 31st Down and Connor Folk Weekend took place in Dromantine Retreat and Conference Centre on 16th and 17th Nov 2013 and was attended by 200 people.  The theme of the weekend was “God’s Chosen People” based on the theme music for this year’s Diocesan Congress. The weekend was also dedicated to the memory of former DCF member Kevin Jordan.

The music was chosen to resource folk groups with music for the liturgical year whilst attempting to develop skills, talent and their Catholic faith.  DCF introduced the morning, showcasing the music for the day,  this was followed by 5 workshops – melody, high and low harmony, instruments and guitars.

The faith development input was given by Brendan Dowd who explained how being called to be God’s chosen people was an invitation to love and be loved.  The founder of DCF Paul McCrossan also gave advice as to how best involve the congregation in the singing.dcf8

Several hours of practice culminated in the workshops coming together and making a beautiful noise!  This Folk Weekend was attending by many young people who brought great energy and enthusiasm and no small amount of skill and talent. The Parish of Duneane in Co Antrim and St Mary’s Youth Choir, Drogheda were particularly well represented and firm friendships were formed.

Living Youth Director, Pauline Dowd was delighted that so many young people are keeping the Church folk music genre alive.  In particular she was pleased that young people who had been introduced to Living Youth at events in the past year were a part of the weekend.

The work on Saturday was celebrated in prayerful and challenghhing paraliturgy prepared by Claire Deane. We were reminded that our baptism and confirmation set us aside for something special and powerful.

The Folk Weekend has always included a fun social activity so to wind down Pauline and Grainne presented their annual Big Quiz with enough chocolate to keep even the most ardent chocoholic happily satisfied.

There was a final rehearsal on Sunday morning followed by the celebration of Mass with Bishop Donal and dinner.  The date of next year’s folk weekend was released – 15th/16th November before the very sad goodbyes of the folk group family.
