Cushendun Folk Group

Cushendun Folk Group was formed in Autumn 2004 by Fr Ciaran Dallat. The initial few members soon grew to many – ranging from 9yr olds to pensioners, all of whom thought they were just marvelous and now we are! Our members include:

  • Annemarie McKendry
  • Daniel McNeill
  • Stephen Campbell
  • Grace McKendry
  • Geraldine Magee
  • Eileen McCullough
  • Tara McHugh
  • Jane McCambridge
  • Ryan McCormick
  • Mary McNeill
  • Donny McNeill
  • Joan McDonagh
  • Frank McDonagh
  • Kenneth McDonagh

As a group we practice on a Sunday night, anything from 1 – 2 hours (depending on up and coming events). We sing in St Patrick’s Church, Cushendun, Sunday @ 12 noon and in Our Lady’s Star of the Sea, Culraney, Sun @ 10am, on alternate weeks. We share the Easter Tridium with the choir in St Patrick’s Church while we sing at Easter Sunday Mass in both churches, and Christmas Midnight in Our Lady’s Star of the Sea, Culraney.

Harmoniously, the Folk Group and the Choir perform side by side in concerts within our own parish and the neighbouring parish. Both groups really enjoyed working together in preparation for the reopening of St Patrick’s Church in 2011, each using their respective material (mostly DCF material for us), to enhance the occasion.

Lately, our numbers have dwindled as have our younger members. However, the Folk Group were recently asked to sing at a local wedding and following that it was suggested that we make a CD. Within the next few weeks we hope to release the CD with the proceeds going towards the cost of the recent refurbishing of St Patrick’s Church. Just send me an email if you would like to purchase one and support our cause: amtrouble@hotmail.co.uk

Each year we look forward to the DCF music weekend and the opportunity to learn some great music and to have a bit of craic and this year we won the quiz beating second placed Clonard Folk Group by a substantial margin! We are also delighted that the Down & Connor Youth Commission is up and running again and that they will be organising additional DCF days in the Diocese and providing resources, can’t wait to see the new website.
